About the Role
Carbon is looking for a Senior Manufacturing Systems Engineer to join our team of talented engineers in our Santa Clara, CA office. The ideal candidate is a systems engineer with a passion for solving complex manufacturing challenges -- someone who thrives on digging into difficult problems across hardware, software, and data to find root cause and drive lasting fixes.
In this role, you will lead troubleshooting of our complex end-of-line systems and develop robust test and bring-up processes that make our production line more efficient, self-sustaining, and capable of delivering the highest quality products. You will be a key driver in building the kind of systematic, repeatable testing infrastructure that lets our production team move fast with confidence -- ensuring every product that leaves the building meets Carbon's exacting standards.
Responsibilities
- Own root cause analysis and troubleshooting of complex electro-mechanical and optical systems, using data analysis and MES tools to identify, validate, and resolve issues at their source.
- Serve as a key technical resource for the production floor -- rapidly unblocking manufacturing personnel when issues arise, driving corrective actions through to full resolution so the line stays moving and problems don't recur.
- Partner with production and cross-functional teams (Design, Systems, Quality, Supply Chain) to implement corrective actions and drive lasting process improvements.
- Develop and maintain reporting dashboards to track, trend, and communicate manufacturing KPIs -- turning data into actionable insights for the production line.
- Lead Product Validation Testing (PVT) for new products, building bring-up and end-of-line test processes that are robust, repeatable, and scalable.
- Translate technical findings into updated work instructions and process documentation, ensuring fixes are captured and sustained on the production floor.
Requirements
- B.S./M.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Systems Engineering -- a background spanning hardware and software is strongly preferred.
- 5+ years in a manufacturing environment, with the ability to manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Hands-on troubleshooting experience with complex electro-mechanical, optical, or similarly integrated systems.
- Proficiency in Python or similar scripting tools for querying, analyzing, and visualizing manufacturing data; experience with Splunk or Quickbase a plus.
- Proven ability to resolve production line issues using structured root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, or similar).
- Experience building KPI dashboards and applying statistical tools to identify trends and drive process improvements.
- Able to translate technical findings into clear work instructions, process documentation, and corrective action plans.
- Strong communicator who works effectively across Design, Systems, Quality, and Supply Chain teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience troubleshooting equipment containing UV lasers, high-end optics, or complex fluid systems.
- Experience in additive manufacturing or 3D printing production environments.
